Apple Macintosh Mac PowerBook 160, 6MB RAM, 40MB HD, 3.5"FD - Restored/recapped/tested/working

The PowerBook 160 was introduced in October 1992. It is powered by a 25MHz 68030 processor and factory equipped with 4 MB of RAM, a 3.5" floppy drive and a 4-bit, greyscale, passive matrix screen; these screens are aging much better than the "tunnel of death" active matrix versions in some other PowerBook models (such as the 180). This unit has been upgraded to 6MB of RAM.

The laptop has been extensively refurbished: all leaking electrolytic capacitors on the display panel have been replaced, the floppy drive has been cleaned, the accumulated gunk in the internal trackball mechanism has been thoroughly cleaned, the hinges' mounts have been reinforced, the PRAM battery has been removed to prevent leakage and corrosion, the "feet" have been lubricated and function flawlessly, the infamously stiff hinges on this generation of laptops have been cleaned and lubricated and the (dead) battery has been recycled; however the battery sliding lid is still present. The screen opens and closes very smoothly. With this restoration, this collectible laptop should still run for many years to come.

This laptop is in an overall great cosmetic condition - inside and out. The often missing I/O port flap is still present. The screen is bright, stable and sharp with no burnt or stuck pixels.

Extensively tested: sound, display, brightness and contrast controls, trackball, keyboard, floppy drive, hard disk, external SCSI port, everything is working as it should.  

The hard disk in this laptop is over 30 years old and is still functioning perfectly; however, there is no telling how long it will continue working. Should it fail, a modern, solid-state replacement hard disk can be installed. 

Included are: the PowerBook 160 with the battery locking tab. MacOS 7.1 (French) is installed on the hard disk with some programs. Note: this laptop is equipped with a French (Canada) keyboard. It's layout is the standard US QWERTY layout, except that some of the punctuation keys are labelled as accented characters (these keys register as the standard punctuation characters with the English version of MacOS). Note: no power adapter is included - this model requires a standard 7.5VDC @ 2amps adapter.

Despite this laptop having been extensively tested and found to be fully functional, it IS over 30 years old technology and as such, there is no guarantee offered, or implied, for continued functioning. This lot is being sold as-is.
