Description

Apple Macintosh Mac PowerBook 140, 8MB RAM/1.83GB BlueSCSI/3.5"FD - Restored/recapped/tested/working

In 1991, thirty two years ago, the PowerBook 140 was introduced, along with the PowerBooks 100 and 170. These were considered the first true and successful laptops marketed by Apple after the Portable's commercial failure.

This Powerbook 140 is highly collectible and fully loaded. It is equipped with  a 16MHz 68030 processor. The memory has been upgraded to the full 8 MB, the modem option board is installed (untested), the dead hard disk has been upgraded to a solid-state 1.83 GB BlueSCSI. The 140 also includes a 3.5" floppy drive and a passive matrix LCD screen; these screens are aging much better than the "tunnel of death" active matrix versions in some other PowerBook models (such as the 180).

The laptop has been fully refurbished: all leaking electrolytic capacitors in the display panel have been replaced, the floppy drive has been cleaned, the accumulated gunk in the internal trackball mechanism has been thoroughly cleaned, the hinge mounts have been reinforced, the PRAM battery has been removed to prevent leakage and corrosion, the "feet" have been lubricated and function flawlessly, the infamously stiff hinges on this generation of laptops have been cleaned and lubricated. The screen opens and closes very smoothly and the failing hard disk has been replaced by a modern, faster, and much more reliable solid-state BlueSCSI "hard disk". With the professionally performed restoration, this collectible laptop should still run for many, many years to come.

This laptop is in an overall great cosmetic condition - inside and out. The often missing I/O port flap is still present and has been modified to close magnetically instead of using the original, flimsy and often broken plastic clip. The screen is bright, stable and sharp with no burnt or stuck pixels.

Extensively tested: sound, display, brightness and contrast controls, trackball, keyboard, floppy drive, hard disk, external SCSI port, everything is working as it should.

Included are: the PowerBook 140, the Apple-original power adapter, the original dead battery with its locking tab. MacOS 7.1.1 Pro is freshly installed on the BlueSCSI with many utilities, some programs and some games (not all installed software is necessarily compatible with this model).

Despite this laptop having been extensively tested and found to be fully functional, it IS over 30 years old technology and as such, there is no guarantee offered, or implied, for continued functioning. This lot is being sold as-is with no returns accepted.

Great collectible, FUNCTIONAL laptop for retro-computing, retro-gaming or for use as a decorative item or as a prop.  This laptop is ready to use and enjoy!
