Custom modified Apple Pro speakers for use with the PowerMac G4 Cube
The speakers that came with the PowerMac G4 Cube were specially designed USB speakers for the Cube as the Cube had no built-in audio! The speakers were connected to an interface box which in turn was connected to the Cube via USB. The interface box contained the equivalent of a USB sound card and an amplifier to drive the speakers. Most (if not all) G4 Cube speakers suffered from a common problem and many were disposed of because of this problem. The problem is that the black foam membrane surrounding the speaker cone deteriorated over time, started to fall apart and the very sticky fallen pieces ended up inside the transparent speaker housing resulting in poor sound and unsightly speaker housings. Because of this, many owners disposed of their speakers; this explains the rarity of such speakers and the high price they commend when available.
As it turns out, Apple used identical looking speakers on the G4 iMac except that: (1) these speakers used a rubber speaker cone membrane which fares way better than the foam membrane on the Cube speakers, (2) the membrane on the iMac speakers was white instead of black, and (3) the iMac speakers used a very special connector with a chip that prevented using them on computers other than the ones designed by Apple and intended to use them.
Here is a custom modified set of iMac speakers that plug into the Cube via USB and give it back sound while looking VERY similar to the G4 Cube speakers.
These speakers work not only with the Cube, but practically any computer with a USB port. They sound absolutely great; the iMac Pro speakers on which these are based are considered to be the best speakers sold by Apple.
