Vintage 1984 Apple Mac Macintosh 128K M0001 in box - Restored/Serviced/Working
Beautiful, classic, iconic, rare, restored, BOXED, tested, working, all original, non-upgraded, first Macintosh model M0001 from 1984. Early, week 38 of 1984 production, with a 400k internal disk drive and 128k of memory. Includes matching, week 36 & 37 peripherals and many rare extras: mouse and keyboard in original Picasso boxes, Picasso accessory box, most original documentation, most original disks and more.
Towards the end of January 1984, Apple introduced the first Macintosh. It was a revolutionary computer with 128KB of memory and it was the first available, “affordable”, consumer computer with a graphical user interface. Due to the very low amount of installed (soldered) memory, the majority of original Mac owners had their computer upgraded to 512K of memory (by an Apple dealer or by a third party) and few of the first, collectible, original, non-upgraded, 1984, 128k Macs - with the original case, the original logic board and the original disk drive - remain.
This particular 1984 Macintosh is one of the original Macintoshes and one of the rare such models in its original configuration and in its original shipping box without upgrades.
The computer was recently restored, serviced, repaired, dusted, cleaned and detailed. This Mac, its keyboard and mouse are in excellent condition. The system unit, keyboard and mouse are all very clean, with little discoloration. This is a very rare find... unlike many Macs being offered which are dusty, dirty and filthy; this computer has been thoroughly cleaned and detailed.
From what I could see, other than some faint use marks, the system has no cracks, no chips, no dents, no missing parts, no stickers, no sticker residue, no marker writings, no pry marks and I could not see any corrosion. The Mac did however, have a lightly engraved identifier on the back of its case, on the back of its keyboard and on the side of its mouse. The previous owner seems to have sanded down the three engravings; a relatively clean job. While still very faintly visible, the sanded portions are not really noticeable; I’ve included enhanced pictures, darkened and with increased contrast, so that you can properly assess the condition of the back of the Mac case, the back of the keyboard and the side of the mouse. The side of the computer likely had a small piece of paper stuck to it for some time and is a slightly different shade of beige where the paper was stuck.
This listing includes the original, early production - week 37, 1984 Apple keyboard model M0110 in excellent condition and in its original, rare, cardboard and Styrofoam box, the original, rare, early production - week 36, 1984 Apple mouse model M0100 in excellent condition and in its original, rare, cardboard and Styrofoam box (this is the early mouse model with the large block rectangular connector), the original coiled keyboard cable, un-stretched, with undamaged connector clips, the Apple power cord with Apple logo (correct, bottom-oriented power cord) and the original programmer’s/reset switch. The keyboard has been disassembled, dusted and cleaned. All keycaps have been pulled out and washed. The keyboard is fully tested - all keys work as intended. The mouse has been cleaned, including the internal rollers, sensors and ball - it works flawlessly. The rubber pads are still present and in good condition on both the base of the computer and underneath the keyboard.
The analog board has been fully recapped. All troublesome solder joints on the analog board have been reflowed - after many years of using the computer, these solder joints tend to crack and cause video issues. The flyback transformer and a couple of other components have been replaced to fix video jitters. A fresh layer of graphite has been applied to the CRT's anode as well as a layer dielectric RTV silicone. The CRT's pins have been cleaned (they do form an oxidized layer after 40 years!). The CRT's socket and all connectors have been cleaned with contact cleaner. The screen is clear, bright, stable and sharp with no screen burn-in. The screen brightness control works as intended. The system's voltages have been adjusted to specs. The long depleted, expensive and hard to source clock/PRAM backup battery has been replaced by a fully functional, 3D-printed, replacement battery holder designed to use cheap and readily available LR-44 button cells (not included). With either the original battery model, or this battery holder and three button cells, the computer can keep time and stored parameters even when unplugged.
With all the work performed, this analog board should be able to serve for many years to come.
The logic board looks all original with all chips carrying date codes consistent with the production date of this computer. The memory chips are the original (64Kb) soldered chips with the Apple logo - not socketed chips like some units that were upgraded to 512k and then downgraded to 128k for resale. The ROMs are the original, early revision A, ROMs carrying the Apple copyright and production dates consistent with the computer's production date. The processor is the rare purple ceramic 68000. The computer starts up normally, with a loud bong. Audio is loud and clear.
The 400KB floppy drive has been disassembled, serviced, cleaned of old grease and lubricated; the drive head has been cleaned – the drive loads, reads, writes, formats and ejects, single-sided floppy disks as intended. Original Macs are entirely dependent on the internal floppy drive, so having a properly serviced, tested and working floppy disk drive, like this one, is essential for actual use.
The whole system has been extensively tested and has passed all tests with flying colors: sound, internal floppy drive, external floppy port, keyboard port, keyboard, mouse port, mouse, video, brightness control, volume control, voltages, serial ports, etc...
Included is the original "Picasso" Mac Accessory Kit – rare, original plastic Picasso Accessory box. Nice white color, not all yellowed and discolored like many now are. No splits to the corners of the lid, no chips and no cracks to the plastic. The Apple logo is embossed into the inside tray. Includes the original Picasso power cord cardboard sleeve, the Macintosh introductory audio cassette, an Apple-original (single-sided) Macintosh guided tour floppy disk, the programmer's/reset switch, four unused, vintage Apple rainbow decals and the 160 pages Macintosh Owner's Guide. No writing on the cover or on any of the interior pages; however, the front cover has a small section (top right corner) that has been cut-off (probably had the previous owner’s details). Very nice and clean with all pages and both covers securely attached. Clean cover with Picasso-style original Mac graphics, some very minor shelf wear and barely any stains on the covers. A copy (not Apple-original) of the (single-sided) system disk is also included.
All disks were tested to boot and were successfully copied. No further testing or contents checks have been performed.
This Mac comes in its rare, hard to find, original Apple shipping box with matching serial number. Also included are the top and bottom Styrofoam packing material. The top Styrofoam was broken, but has been glued. Considering its age, the box is in fair condition and complete; it does however exhibit some marker writing, some water stains and some yellowing (see pictures).
Unlike many vintage 1984 Macs being sold, lacking system details, lacking technical descriptions, lacking pictures of the internals, no functional details, no analog board details, no logic board details, no memory details, no upgrade details, no floppy drive details, this is a fully restored, extensively tested and fully documented, working computer in excellent condition.
The "Apple Macintosh" was officially released on January 24, 1984. This particular Macintosh is a highly collectible early production unit with serial number F4384EEM0001 - it is the 5079th Mac manufactured during the 38th week of 1984 (i.e. the week of September 17th, 1984) in Fremont, California, USA.
If you're looking for a very collectible, original, boxed and early 1984 Mac complemented by most of the original documentation, disks and introductory kit, then here is a great opportunity to acquire one.
This early production model, in this particular, unmodified, configuration, is quite scarce and finding one which is in clean cosmetic condition and boxed and extensively tested and fully functional and restored and with original peripherals and with documentation and with original accessories, such as this unit, is not easy... This Macintosh is ready for prominent display and use by the new owner; it needs absolutely nothing! You will not be disappointed!
This is a fantastic and unique opportunity for a serious collector to own a unique piece of early personal computing history. This is one of a handful of Apple models which have the signatures of the design team (including Steve Jobs') molded on the inside of the case.
