Description

Vintage 1984 Apple Mac Macintosh 128K M0001 -Week 5/Restored/Serviced/Working /EXTRAS

In summary: very early, original, non-upgraded 1984 Mac with original peripherals. Serviced, repaired, recapped and tested with many extras.

Beautiful, classic, iconic, rare, restored, tested, working, all original, non-upgraded, first Macintosh model M0001 from 1984. Very early, week 5 of 1984 production (one of the earliest produced Macs offered for sale), with a 400k internal disk drive and 128k of memory. Includes matching, early production (week 3-4) peripherals and many rare extras (mouse in original Picasso box, Picasso accessory box, early release original documentation, disks and more).

Towards the end of January 1984, Apple introduced the first Macintosh. It was a revolutionary computer with 128KB of memory and it was the first available, “affordable”, consumer computer with a graphical user interface. Because the majority of original Mac owners had their computer upgraded to 512K of memory (by an Apple dealer or by a third party), few of the first original, non-upgraded, 1984, 128k Macs - with the original case, the original logic board and the original disk drive - remain.

This particular 1984 Macintosh is one of the earliest Macintoshes and one of the rare such models in its original configuration without upgrades.

This Mac, its keyboard and mouse are in excellent, condition. The system unit, keyboard and mouse are all very clean, with little discoloration (except for the mouse which is a darker shade of beige/light brown). This is a very rare find... unlike many Macs being offered which are dusty, dirty and filthy; this computer has been thoroughly cleaned and detailed.

From what I could see, other than some faint use marks, the system has no cracks, no chips, no dents, no missing parts, no stickers, no sticker residue, no marker writings, and no engravings. The Mac does however, have a small, very light, surface scratch on the front bezel and a couple of small nicks and pry marks - mainly on the bottom seam and on the lower right and left seams. There are also a couple of barely visible thin traces of a dried transparent liquid that seems to have been spilled on the right and left side of the front bezel and on the left side of the computer - I left them "as-is" (see photo) to avoid damaging the surrounding plastic by excessive/aggressive rubbing.

The computer was recently serviced, dusted, cleaned and detailed. The analog board has been professionally repaired and fully recapped. All troublesome solder joints on the analog board have been reflowed - after many years of using the computer, these solder joints tend to crack and cause video issues. The screen is clear, bright, stable and sharp with no screen burn-in. The logic board looks all original with all chips carrying date codes consistent with the production date of this computer. The memory chips are the original soldered chips with the Apple logo - not socketed like some units that were upgraded to 512k and then downgraded to 128k for resale. The computer starts up normally, with a loud bong. Audio is loud and clear. The 400KB floppy drive has been disassembled, serviced, cleaned of old grease and lubricated; the drive head has been cleaned – the drive loads, reads, writes, formats and ejects, single-sided floppy disks as intended.  Original Macs are completely dependent on the floppy drive; so having a properly serviced and tested floppy disk drive, like this one, is essential for actual use.

This listing includes the original (early production - week 3, 1984) Apple keyboard model M0110 in excellent condition, the original, rare (early production - week 4, 1984) Apple mouse model M0100 in excellent condition and in its original, rare, cardboard and Styrofoam box (this is the early mouse model with the large block rectangular connector. Note that the ends of the mouse box cardboard sleeve were cut by the previous owner), the original coiled keyboard cable with undamaged connector clips, the Apple power cord with Apple logo (correct, bottom-oriented power cord) and the original programmer’s/reset switch. The keyboard has been disassembled, dusted and cleaned. All keycaps have been washed. The keyboard is fully tested - all keys work as intended. The mouse has been cleaned, including the internal rollers, sensors and ball - it works perfectly. The rubber pads are still present and in good condition on both the base of the computer and underneath the keyboard. The long depleted, expensive and hard to source clock/PRAM backup battery has been replaced by a fully functional, 3D-printed, replacement battery holder designed to use cheap and readily available LR-44 button cells (not included). With either the original battery model or this battery holder and three button cells, the computer can keep time and stored parameters even when unplugged.

Included is the rare, original "Picasso" Mac Accessory box. Somewhat yellowed, however it is in very good overall condition with minor cracks on the corners of the lid. The Apple logo is embossed into the inside tray.  Includes the Picasso power cord cardboard sleeve, the Macintosh guided tour cassette, the Apple-original, single-sided, Macintosh guided tour floppy disk, the Apple-original System disk, the programmer's/reset switch, two unused, vintage Apple Rainbow decals and the 160 pages Macintosh Owner's Guide. Note that this is the very rare first edition of the guide printed in 1983 (part # 030-0687 - not the A or B versions which are more common). This edition was only included for the first couple of months following the launch of the Macintosh. From a quick scan, there appears to be no writing on the cover or on any of the interior pages. Very nice and clean with all pages and both covers securely attached; the manual cover is clean but it does exhibit some very minor yellowing, staining and shelf wear.

Also included are:  the MacWrite/MacPaint guided tour cassette, the original MacWrite/MacPaint guided tour floppy, the early, original, MacWrite manual (part # 030-0688 - not the A or B versions which are more common), the early, original, MacPaint manual (part # 030-0848) and the original single-sided MacWrite/MacPaint disks.

All disks were successfully recognized. No further testing or contents checks have been performed.

This listing also includes the "Macintosh" packing list/quick setup foldout and the "If you can point, you can use a Macintosh" foldout. Both foldouts are in good condition and are believed to be very early prints: the “Macintosh” foldout has no part number and no date (later releases bear part number 030-0685, revision A or B) and the “If you can point, you can use a Macintosh” foldout has a printed date of 12/83 printed on the back.

All items in this listing were stored in a smoke-free, climate-controlled, environment - no smoke smell or musty odors absorbed by any of the included items.

Unlike many vintage 1984 Macs being sold, lacking system details, lacking technical descriptions, lacking pictures of the internals, in a condition of: "as-is", "untested", "for repair or restoration", "no boot disk to test" / "does not boot" /  "screen with disk and question mark" (hidden upgrade(s)?), "original model number" (means absolutely nothing, as most original 128Ks were upgraded!), no functional details, no logic board details, no memory details, no upgrade details, no floppy drive details, this is a fully restored, fully  tested, original and fully documented, working computer in excellent condition.

The "Apple Macintosh" was officially released on January 24, 1984. This particular Macintosh, is a VERY early production unit with serial number F40520RM0001 - it is the 2337th Mac manufactured during the 5th week of 1984 (i.e. the week of January 30th, 1984) in Fremont, California, USA; this is one of the earliest Macs ever produced: it was produced one week after the Macintosh was officially launched! Notice the black cover and the upper metal shield on the analog board in the pictures; this is consistent with very early production Macs – later Macs had a white cover and no upper metal shield on their analog board.

If you're looking for a highly collectible and very early Mac complemented by most of the original documentation, disks and introductory kit, then here is a great opportunity to acquire one.

This early production model, in this particular, unmodified, configuration, is quite scarce and finding one which is in clean cosmetic condition, fully tested and fully functional and restored and with early peripherals and with rare early documentation and with original disks such as this unit, is not easy... This Macintosh is ready for prominent display and use by the new owner, it needs absolutely nothing!  You will not be disappointed!

This is a fantastic and unique opportunity for a serious collector to own a unique piece of early personal computing history. This is one of a handful of Apple models which have the signatures of the design team (including Steve Jobs') molded on the inside of the case.

All photos are of the exact items the buyer will receive. Nothing else is included. Additional photos are available upon request.

Considering its age, and despite it having been fully tested, it IS almost 40 years old and as such, I cannot guarantee continued functioning. This lot is being sold “as-is” without any guarantee, offered or implied; no returns accepted.

Shipping fees, customs fees (if any applicable), duties (if any applicable) and taxes (if any applicable) are the responsibility of the buyer.
