Vintage, Collectible 1984 Apple Mac Macintosh 128K M0001 – PRISTINE/Serviced/Tested/Working
Beautiful, classic, iconic, rare, genuine, vintage Apple Macintosh from 1984, model M0001.This is an original, highly collectible, first Mac model from 1984 in collector-grade, non-upgraded condition with the original 400 KB single-sided internal disk drive, the original 128k of memory and the "Macintosh" emblem - many Macs of that era were upgraded and yet kept the original model number and serial number - upgrades included memory upgrades, ROM upgrades (to access 800KB double-sided drives introduced in 1986), upgraded internal 800kb floppy drive, miscellaneous other internal upgrades to add a SCSI port etc... Also, at the end 1984, Apple sold an upgraded 128K Mac with a "Macintosh 128k" emblem and a modified logic board - these are not the original Macs and are not as collectible.
Unlike many vintage Macs being sold, lacking system details, lacking technical descriptions, lacking pictures of the internals, in a condition of: "as-is", "untested", "for repair or restoration", "no boot disk to test" (hidden upgrade?), "does not boot", "screen with disk and question mark" (hidden upgrade?), "original model number" (means absolutely nothing, as most original 128Ks were upgraded!), no logic board details, no memory details, no upgrade details, no floppy drive details - this is a restored, tested and extensively documented, original, genuine, unaltered, working Macintosh from early 1984 - in amazing condition.
This Mac, its keyboard and mouse are in amazing, collector-grade, condition. The system unit, keyboard and mouse are all the same beige/cream color, not all darkly yellowed, discolored, color mismatched, or damaged like many are now. Even the keyboard’s space bar which, after many years, tends to turn into a different shade of much darker grey/brown from other keys, has not darkened much! This 39+ years old Mac has aged very well and is a very rare find... unlike many Macs being offered which are dusty, dirty and filthy, this computer has been thoroughly cleaned and detailed. There are not too many Macs of this time period in the same like-new condition!
From what I could see, other than some faint and barely discernible use marks, the computer has no cracks, no nicks, no chips, no dents, no dings, no missing parts, no stickers, no sticker residue, no marker writings, no engravings, no pry marks, no corrosion (other than a tiny spot on one of the two battery compartment metal tabs). It also has no musty or cigarette smells. Recently dusted and cleaned. The 400KB floppy drive has been serviced, cleaned of old grease and lubricated; the drive's head has been cleaned – it loads, reads, writes, formats and ejects, single-sided floppy disks as intended. Original Macs are completely dependent on the floppy drive; so having a properly serviced and tested floppy disk drive, like this one, is essential for actual use.
The screen is bright, clear, stable and sharp with no screen burn-in an no scratches. The logic board looks all original with all chips carrying date codes consistent with the production date of this computer. The 16 memory chips are the original 64Kb chips with the Apple logo. The ROM chips are also original, correct, revision A chips. The computer starts up normally, with a loud bong. Sound is loud and clear. All troublesome solder joints on the analog board have been reflowed - after many years of using the computer, these solder joints tend to crack and cause video issues. The flyback transformer has had a fresh layer of corona dope applied to it to avoid other video issues. The analog board RIFA capacitor has been replaced (after almost 40 years, this old capacitor is infamous for blowing up unexpectedly with a loud bang, lots of lingering, awful smelling, smoke and the occasional collateral damage!). Includes the original Apple power cord (correct bottom oriented power cord with the Apple logo), the original 1984 Apple keyboard (model M0110) in like-new condition, the original, early (rare) Apple mouse (model M0100) with the rectangular block connector and Apple logo - in like-new condition and the original coiled keyboard cable, un-stretched and with undamaged connector clips. The keyboard has been fully tested - all keys work as intended. The mouse has been cleaned, including the internal rollers, sensors and ball - it works perfectly. The factory installed, long depleted, expensive and hard to source clock/PRAM backup battery has been replaced by a fully functional, 3D-printed, replacement battery holder using cheap, readily available button cells (cells not included). With either the original battery model or this battery holder with the button cells in place, the computer can keep time and stored parameters even when unplugged. The rubber feet/pads are still present and in good condition on both the base of the computer and underneath the keyboard.
Included is the original (bottom oriented) power cord, the original programmer's/reset switch and the 160 page Macintosh Owner's Guide. Very nice and clean with all pages and the front cover securely attached; the manual’s back cover is slightly detached at the bottom. Clean cover with Picasso-style original Mac graphics, some shelf wear and light stains on the covers. A copy (non Apple-original) of the (single-sided) system disk is also included.
Rare and original, Apple MacWrite/MacPaint BOXED set in good condition. Includes the guided tour cassette as well as an original MacWrite/MacPaint guided tour floppy. Both the original MacWrite and MacPaint manuals are also included in the box. The front cover of the MacWrite manual has a small section that seems to have been torn-off (it possibly had the name of the original owner). The MacWrite manual seems to have been delivered with the covers bound UPSIDE-DOWN! Copies (non-original) of the (single-sided) MacWrite and MacPaint disks are also included. This is a very rare boxed set that was only available in the first half of 1984 after the Mac was first introduced.
All original disks were tested to boot. No further testing or contents check has been performed.
The "Apple Macintosh" was officially released on January 24, 1984. This particular Macintosh, is an early production unit with serial F424LY5M001 - it is the 24213th Mac manufactured during the 24th week (mid-June) of 1984 in Fremont, California, USA; this is one of the earliest Macs produced (it was produced many months before the Mac 512k and the modified Mac 128k were introduced).
This model, in this particular, original (unmodified) configuration, is quite scarce and finding one which is in such AMAZING cosmetic condition, tested and fully functional, such as this unit, is not easy... This Macintosh is ready for prominent display and use by the new owner, it needs absolutely nothing! Always stored in a smoke-free, climate-controlled, environment - no smoke smell or old musty odors absorbed into any of the included items. You will not be disappointed!
This is a fantastic and unique opportunity for a serious collector to own a unique piece of computing history. This is one of a handful of Apple models which have the signatures of the design team (including Steve Jobs') molded on the inside of the case.
All photos are of the exact items the buyer will receive. Nothing else is included. Additional photos are available upon request.
